Today

Today, a young boy

Told me that his dog had died

And we sat together

Separated by forty years

And shared the pain

Grief is the most peculiar friend

At first, an enemy

A thug who has knocked you down

And kicked your teeth in

This feeling is so alien

That it can only be assault

But the longer you live

The more we meet grief

And after it has worked us over

A time or two

We find that it stays with us

In those lost spaces

Reminding us of what we had

Through tears and stillness

Thoughts

Loss is inevitable the longer you live and the more you love. There are no words only that shared connection through grief. Hopefully there is someone who can sit with you in your hour of need so that one day you can also sit with them.
