The Pier

One hundred years ago

You left the forest and

Set out for the coast

At the behest of old men

In tall hats

You were shaped

Redirecting your strength

Joining with others

Rooted once again to the earth

But this time in concrete shoes

No longer barefoot but up to your neck

In water you are surrounded

By new friends both wet and dry

And you give life to both

And joy to most who

Have travelled your length

And held onto your

Muscular structure

Gazing out across the sea

Towards hope and despair

You have been there

Holding each one

Across your broad shoulders

Thoughts

Brighton Pier as inspiration.
