Poets
Poets
They are everywhere in Lewes
Look, three have come into
The shop since we started talking
Careful
Don’t let them catch your eye
Once they start, it’s all
Rhyming couplets and oh no
What’s the matter here?
Let me compare you to a summers
Hey!
We’re being surrounded
Quick!
Dive into fiction
They’re scared of bestsellers
They’ll tell us of fella’s
Who’ve slept in a hovel
And lived off a crust
While they wrote their first novel
It’s no good
I think they’ve infected my mind
It’s too late to save me
Can I show you a line?

Thoughts
The start of this poem is a paraphrase of a conversation with the guy behind the counter in the Oxfam bookshop in Lewes. I bought a lot of poetry books that day. The sky was so blue.
