Self Made

The first time we met you were inconsolable

You had lost everything

Suddenly, homeless

I collected you

Calmed you

Comforted you

Wiping the blood from your face

I told you it would be okay

I taught you how to walk and talk

Hold the spoon and kick a ball

You’d forgotten it all

I gave you a roof and clothed you

In all things you were loved

Strangers got to know you

And shared all the knowledge

That had been acquired

Freely given

Freely received

You began to paint

Write

Code

Because of the patience and kindness

Of others

There was a time you didn’t see

Skin colour or social standing

But it changed in an instant

When you said you were a self-made man

You did it by yourself

Really?

Thoughts

Self made people make me laugh. Here is a self carved sculpture. Made with no help from anyone.
