Pareidolia

I can see people in the

Abstract pattern of the curtains

Which cover the void

And keep me safe from the

Monsters that lurk outside

Although I know it is

Pareidolia at work

Still the forms move and

Speak in a silent language

That only I can hear

Is it an overactive imagination

Or am I getting a glimpse

Of a world that continues

To exist when I am not

Paying attention

Some say that magic

Never disappeared

We just lost the

Ability to see

Thoughts

Pareidolia is not a word you hear very often but it came up twice this year. In Ken Pomeroy’s excellent album, Cruel Joke. It is the opening track. It is also a card in Balatro. What a game!

What do you see in the pond?
